Psalm 8

Great God in heaven, You are the creator of all things seen and unseen, how intriguing is Your name, how beautiful and glorious, how magnificent is Your holy name.  Lord, there is nothing on earth that compares to the sound of Your name.  From the begininning of time, to the creation of the universe, Your name has been exalted.  In Exodus, You tell us You are I AM WHO I AM, You declared Yourself to Moses as the Eternal One, and not only the Creator of all, but in the name I AM, You also declare that You are a God of relationships, a God who comes and communes with Your people, a covenantal God.  I AM WHO I AM, You are a promise maker and a promise keeper!  How glorious! Yahweh, meaning the One who is, the self-existent One, You never change, "For I am the Lord, I do not change..."-Malachi 3-6, "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever."-Hebrews 13:8.  Your promises never fail, "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful."-Hebrews 10:23, "Not one of all the LORD's good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled."-Joshua 21:45. "Praise be to the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel just as he promised.  Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses."-1 Kings 8:56, "Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them."-Psalm 119:140, "Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made."-Psalm 145:13.  You are faithful, "If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is."-2 Timothy 2:13.  


We know from Your Word that if we are quiet, if we allow this old world to keep us silent, even the rocks will declare Your holy name (Luke 19:40) and so it only makes sense that You used even the tiniest of babies to proclaim Your strength and Your glory (Matthew 21:26), because the priests and the scribes were trying to silence those who were praising Your name.  At the proclamation of the Lord, Your enemies will be silenced.  


God, at night when I look up and see all those glimmering stars, I cannot fathom the vastness of this universe.  Lord, You are a God of the details.  The fantastic display of lights in the heavens, those are the works of Your hands, You placed each star perfectly where it should go, yet You want to have an intimate relationship with me.  I just don't understand how or why the God of the universe, the Creator of all things, would want to have a relationship with me.  Who am I that You are mindful of me, God?  The very thought of this is so humbling.  God, You created us in Your image,  placing us above all things, the head of Your creation, only a little lower than the angels.  We are born into sin, a fallen people, yet only through the salvation of Your Son, we are restored, and You crown us with Your glory and Your honor.  God, You gave us authority over all things created by You and for You, on land, in the sky, and in the water, God over all things.  You have set us over them.

"Yahweh, our Sovereign God, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!"
